Under the UNC Online Interinstitutional Collaboration, any approved enrolled full-time degree UNC-CH seeking graduate or undergraduate student (excluding Arts & Sciences undergrads, continuing studies, visiting, or non-degree students), may register for courses from the UNC Online site.

The student may take an online course, providing seats are available, at any of the 16 University of North Carolina Schools if the student’s academic advisor and dean can certify that the course is appropriate for the student’s degree program (e.g., graduate courses are available only to graduate students) and the intended course must not available during the same academic term at the home institution.

Please see below for enrollment provisions and instructions appropriate to your classification.

  • Fall and Spring TermsSix total interinstitutional credit hours per term for a graduate or professional school student, provided that the student is also registered for at least three credit hours per semester at his/her home institution.
  • Summer TermsOne course per summer session term, provided that the student is also registered for at least three credit hours per session at his/her home institution.
  • Graduate/Professional Students are not allowed to register for any undergraduate level courses.
Only graduate level courses are eligible to count toward a student’s graduate degree requirements at Carolina.

Graduate and Professional students must request the desired course online at the UNC Online website, and obtain approval from their academic advisor and dean and complete the information on the Online Interinstitutional Approval Form.

  • Fall and Spring TermsOne interinstitutional course per regular term, providing the student is registered for the balance / remaining 9 hours (totaling 12 credit hours including the interinstitutional course for undergraduates) of their fulltime load at UNC-CH.
  • Summer TermsOne course per summer session term, provided that the student is also registered for at least three credit hours per session at his/her home institution.

Undergraduate students must request the desired course online at the UNC Online website, and obtain approval from their advisor as well as their academic dean’s office and complete the information on the Online Interinstitutional Approval Form.

Please note that if the course has registration restrictions, you will need to obtain approval from the instructor or department at the host institution.

No student will be allowed to take an interinstitutional course at a participating campus without being registered for the balance of his/her full load at UNC-CH.

The visited/ host institution of the interinstitutional course will bill the student for the course taken at the prevailing tuition rate. UNC Chapel Hill will receive no fees from the UNC-CH homed interinstitutional student.

A student taking a course via online interinstitutional registration will be graded in the course in accordance with the grading system of the institution where the course is taken. Grades will be converted to the UNC grading system prior to being recorded on the academic record.

Students are not allowed to register for interinstitutional classes on a Pass/Fail basis.

UNC-CH students wishing to take courses at the participating schools must request the desired course online at the UNC Online website, and obtain appropriate signatures of approval and complete the Online Interinstitutional Approval Form.

Once you have received all of the appropriate signatures, return the completed Online Interinstitutional Approval Form to the Office of the University Registrar via email, fax (919-962-3349), through campus mail, or in person to Suite 3100, SASB North, where your information will be certified.

Please register for the courses you are planning to take on campus and online before returning the form to the Registrar’s Office.
The last day for a student to submit an online interinstitutional request to the Office of the Registrar will be the last day to add a course without departmental approval. This information corresponds to that term’s University Registrar’s Calendar. If a student is interested in a course that begins after this deadline, due to differing University schedules, or separate modules that the course is being offered in, the deadline will be the fifth day after the start of that class. Start dates will be verified with the school offering the course.

If approved by UNC-CH to enroll in the requested online interinstitutional course, your request will be sent to the visited/ host institution. Once their registration date opens for visiting students, they will attempt to register you.

You will receive confirmation of your status from the host institution.

All interinstitutional drops MUST be processed by the Interinstitutional Coordinator at UNC’s Registrar’s Office to ensure that the host institution is notified of the drop. Processing an interinstitutional drop through a department will result in billing, grading, and records errors.

All requests for visiting students requesting enrollment at UNC-CH through UNC Online will be processed by the Friday Center for Continuing Education. Information on the Friday Center can be found at http://www.fridaycenter.unc.edu/.
