Apples Service-Learning

APPLES Service-Learning is a student-led program that builds sustainable, service-learning partnerships among students, faculty and communities in North Carolina and beyond.

• APPLES experiential programs foster socially aware and civically involved students.

Capstone Courses

Capstone Courses will satisfy upper-level B.A. requirements or may be used as electives. You may use a Capstone Course in your major department to satisfy a perspective requirement.

Carolina Courses Online

Through Carolina Courses Online, distance education courses are offered on a semester schedule in the spring, fall, and over an extended summer session.

Class attendance is not required, but students communicate with classmates and their instructor via e-mail and discussion forums. Courses originate and credit is granted from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)

As part of the Connecting Carolina Classrooms with the World initiative, the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs (OVPGA) provides faculty with support and funding for implementing Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) as a part of its continued efforts to advance the internationalization of the Carolina curriculum.

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a flexible pedagogical approach to global education. First developed by the State University of New York (SUNY), COIL can be embedded into course curricula in order to connect faculty and students from across the world through shared learning experiences and global, cross-institutional collaboration.

First Year Seminars

First Year Seminars (FYS) offer an introduction to the intellectual life of the university.

While drawing on diverse disciplines and subject areas, the seminars share a focus on how scholars pose problems, discover solutions, resolve controversies, and evaluate knowledge.

Our First Year Seminars (FYS) usually include no more than twenty-four students, are taught by the University’s most distinguished researchers and most skillful teachers, and focus on an advanced, emergent, and stimulating topic.

Honors courses

From Art History to International Studies, from Biology to Classics, Honors Carolina offers more than 100 Honors courses each year that encompass virtually every discipline in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Honors courses are accessible to all students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or higher. Members of Honors Carolina may enroll in Honors courses online when registration begins.

As space permits, other eligible students may enroll by visiting the Honors Carolina office, located in Room 225, Graham Memorial.

Languages Across the Curriculum

The Languages Across the Curriculum (LAC) Program offers students the opportunity to use world languages in a variety of courses outside the language and literature curricula.

LAC aims to promote a better understanding of world regions while demonstrating the relevance of practical language skills across the disciplines.

The LAC Program has offered course options in a variety of languages, disciplines, and course formats. Students who enroll in LAC recitation or discussion sections can receive one graded hour of world language credit. Some three-hour seminars in the target language are also available.
