Dean's and Degree Recipient Lists

The Dean’s List

The Dean’s List is an academic honor awarded to undergraduate students who achieve high academic performance during a semester. It is a prestigious recognition that highlights academic excellence and can be beneficial for future academic and professional opportunities.

Current Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for the Dean’s List, fulltime students who enter the University as first-time, first-year students beginning in Fall 2010 and later must meet the following requirement:

  • A minimum of a 3.500 semester grade point with no grade lower than a C if enrolled in at least 12 hours of letter-grade credit, exclusive of physical education activities (PHYA) courses.

Note: Courses with a pass/fail grading basis do not count towards the credit hours used to determine Dean’s List.

Historical Eligibility Requirements

Students who began their undergraduate studies at UNC Chapel Hill prior to Fall 2010 must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A 3.200 semester grade-point average with no grade lower than a C if enrolled in fifteen or more hours of letter-grade credit, exclusive of physical education activities courses.
  • A 3.500 grade-point average with no grade lower than a C if enrolled in at least twelve but fewer than fifteen hours of letter- credit, exclusive of physical education activities courses.

Posting Details

The Dean’s List is generated approximately 6-8 weeks after the last day of the term posted on the Academic Calendar. Awards are posted to student records and online to the University Registrar website by:

  • Fall term: mid-February
  • Spring term: mid-July
  • Summer terms: no Dean’s List award.

Dean’s List is a one-time process and will not be posted to a student’s record retroactively if their eligibility changes at a later date.

Students who have requested “Restricted Release of Directory Information” or removal of their student data from the web at Student Central and the Online campus directory will NOT appear on the Dean’s List. Any student who has invoked their right to privacy under FERPA will not appear on the list.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic the Dean’s List was not established for Spring 2020, Fall 2020 and Spring 2021.

Please note pass/fail courses are not used when determining eligibility for the Dean’s List.

Degree Recipient Lists

Degree recipient lists are official records that recognize students who have successfully completed all the requirements for their academic programs and have been awarded their degrees. We publish these lists to highlight the achievements of graduates in various fields of study. Being included on a degree recipient list is a significant milestone that marks the culmination of a student's academic journey and is often used for official documentation and public recognition.
