Graduation Application and requirements

Applying for graduation is easy. Simply follow this link for instructions: https://registrar.unc.edu/applying-for-graduation/

Undergraduates can check their Tar Heel Tracker in ConnectCarolina and meet with their academic advisor to review their progress toward graduation. Graduate and professional students need to contact their programs for assistance.

Please visit commencement.unc.edu for questions about commencement. Department ceremonies are organized by the departments; contact your academic department for more information. The Registrar‘s office does not manage commencement or departmental ceremonies.

Undergraduates should contact the academic advising office for their school.  Students in the College of Arts and Sciences see advisors in the UNC Advising Office. Undergraduates in professional schools should contact the advisors in their school. Graduate and professional students should contact their program for assistance.

Request your official transcript be sent to UNC admissions immediately after your final course grade is posted. Once you have requested that the transcripts be sent, email mygraduation@registrar.unc.edu and transfercredit@admissions.unc.edu to inform both departments of your expected transfer credit 

No, all course grades must be permanent grades before you can be approved for graduation, even if those courses are not needed for graduationFor additional details visit https://catalog.unc.edu/policies-procedures/transcripts/ 

No, all degree requirements must be satisfied to graduate, including meeting the minimum hours. There are no exceptions to these requirements. Undergraduate degree requirements can be found here.  

No, all Campus Life Experiences must be completed and posted to your Tar Heel Tracker before you can be approved for graduation

Underload

You can apply for a senior underload in the same application you use to apply for graduation in ConnectCarolina. Staff begin reviewing fall underload requests starting in the summer. Spring underloads are reviewed starting in late fall. There are no summer underloads. If you apply for an underload by the priority deadline you will receive a response by the first day of classes.  

Please contact your academic advisor to submit an updated request. 

No, senior underloads are only available to students graduating in their last semester. For medical and other circumstances that require an underload, contact your academic advisor 

No, you can remain enrolled in your current courses. Underload approval only specifies the minimum number of hours in which you must enroll in that termYou may enroll in up to 18 hours without any further permission.

Diplomas and degrees

You can confirm your degree has been awarded through the following steps: 

Visit your Student Center in ConnectCarolina. 

Select ”My Academics” under the Academics header on the left.  

 Click ”View My Graduation/Certificate Status” to view the status of  your graduation application.

Distinction

To graduate “with Distinction” orwith Highest Distinction” a student must have completed at least 45 academic hours at UNC-CH and have obtained a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 and 3.8 respectively. 

Honors

Students who wish to graduate from UNC–Chapel Hill with honors or highest honors must complete a senior honors thesis project in their major field(s) of study. Such students need not have been members of Honors Carolina. 

University policy states that students who have completed all coursework by the degree conferral date will have sixty (60) days after that to have all credits and final grades posted and still graduate in that cycle. If the credits are posted more than 60 days after the degree conferral date, then the student will need to re-apply for the next graduation cycle.
