Tar Heel Tracker Student Guide

Tar Heel Tracker Student Guide

Track Your Degree Progress

The Tar Heel Tracker report (THT) is part of a suite of degree audit tools that lists all of the requirements for your degree, including (but not limited to):

  • Minimum number of hours required
  • General Education requirements
  • Major requirements
  • Minor requirements

The Tar Heel Tracker will show if a requirement has or has not been satisfied, and is a useful tool that allows you and your advisor to chart your academic progress towards graduation.

Benefits of THT

  • Provides a real-time look at your academic requirements.
  • Provides an ability to generate data for reports that you and your advisor may use for course planning.
  • Allows authorized personnel to enter course adjustments for you when you may have courses that need to be moved to other requirements.
  • Improves consistency in advising appointments.
  • You and your advisor can explore options by running What If reports (change their majors, add majors and / or minors) and by adding planner or what if courses.

Find Your Degree Requirements

You can find your degree requirements within your Tar Heel Tracker or the undergraduate catalog. To find your general education requirements, click on the catalog link under the requirement term for “Making Connections” or “IDEAs in Action” within your Tar Heel Tracker. To access your major or minor requirements, click on the catalog link under the requirement term for that major or minor.

Functionality of Your THT

Confirm Your Remaining Degree Requirements

The Tar Heel Tracker is the student’s official record of graduation requirements. In order to be approved for graduation, your THT report must be fully “closed” indicating that you have completed all courses and all University graduation requirements. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to confirm their graduation status.

Completed or Pending Requirements are Collapsed

When a requirement is collapsed within the Tar Heel Tracker, this means either (1) that the requirement has been successfully satisfied or (2) that the requirement is currently being fulfilled by a course that is in progress.

Calculating Your Registration Appointment

When determining your registration appointment, the following credits are included in this calculation: All hours completed while in residence at UNC, UNC accepted transfer credit hours, and completed and posted study abroad credits. The following are excluded from this calculation: test credits (such as AP, IB, SAT, etc.), BE and PL credits, and current term and in-progress courses.

Requirement Term

A requirement term identifies the catalog year which details that student’s academic requirements and related policies.  Each major or minor may have a different requirement term. To use a requirement term, you must have enrolled in that specific term.

Changing Your Requirement Term

If you are looking to change the requirement term for your major or minor, please contact an academic advisor for assistance.  If your major or minor is in one of the professional schools, please reach out to an academic advisor within that school.

THT Adjustments

A Tar Heel Tracker adjustment is when a course is moved within the tracker to satisfy another requirement.

Please reach out to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for your major or minor who is responsible for the approval and submission of major/minor adjustments.

The Office of Undergraduate Curricula is responsible for the approval of general education requirement adjustments.  Only seniors and transfer students are eligible to submit a general education course petition.

Troubleshooting

Below are a few examples of errors you may encounter when viewing your THT.

If you are a currently enrolled student your Tar Heel Tracker is not available, please contact tarheeltracker@registrar.unc.edu.  If you are not a currently enrolled student, reach out to your academic advisor.

If your major or minor is incorrect within your Tar Heel Tracker, please reach out to an academic advisor to make sure that your program/plan is properly updated within ConnectCarolina.

If the Tar Heel Tracker is picking up the wrong requirements, this typically means that a student needs to update their requirement term/catalog year.  To update a requirement term, a student should contact their advisor.
