Interinstitutional Enrollment Provisions and Instructions for Visiting Students
Students interested in enrolling at UNC-Chapel Hill as a visiting student through the interinstitutional program should refer to the registrar of their home institution for information regarding the approval process.
Tuition
Visiting students are billed by the Student Accounts office at their home institution.
Grading and Grade Reporting
Grades received at UNC-Chapel Hill will be converted to the grading scale at the student’s home institution.
Online Courses
At UNC-Chapel Hill, interinstitutional students are not permitted to take distance education courses offered through the Digital and Lifelong Learning department because the tuition is not at the prevailing rate. Remote courses taught through individual departments are permitted for visiting student enrollment.
Maymester Courses
Visiting students may not enroll in Maymester courses because the interinstitutional agreement requires students to take courses concurrently at their home and host institutions. Maymester courses are denoted by an “M” on the section number, e.g. ENGL 345 01M.
Registration
Visiting students should not apply to UNC Chapel Hill directly to participate in the interinstitutional program. Registration is coordinated between the registrar’s offices of the student’s home and host institutions.
Submission of the Interinstitutional Approval Form will only be accepted if sent directly from the registrar’s office of the student’s home institution. Any requests submitted without registrar signature will be denied and returned for review.
Interinstitutional enrollment processing begins at Open Enrollment on a first come, first served basis. Open Enrollment dates are listed on the Academic Calendar. Students are encouraged to submit their request to their registrar prior to this date. Enrollment is not guaranteed and further action to complete registration may be required due to class restrictions and/or closures. Waitlists are not available to visiting students if their desired class is unavailable at the time of the registration attempt.
Confirmation of enrollment will be sent to the student and their home institution registrar from specialenrollments@unc.edu with detailed instructions of next steps. Visiting students wishing to drop their course at UNC-Chapel Hill must request this through their home registrar.
Programs Requiring Additional Approval
Visiting students seeking enrollment into courses offered by the following professional schools need additional approval to register. The Interinstitutional Approval Form must be signed by the professional school’s registrar prior to submission to the student’s main campus registrar. Any requests submitted without all required signatures will be denied and returned for review.
